In het Engeland van de jaren 1830 wordt een jonge man uit een goede maar problematische familie ten onrechte veroordeeld voor het stelen van een horloge. Hij wordt getransporteerd naar Van Diemen's Land waar hij lijdt onder de vijandschap van luitenant Frère terwijl hij verliefd wordt op Sylvia, de dochter van de directeur. Ondertussen, terug in Engeland, eist een bedrieger de erfenis van de jongeman op.
