Het verhaal van Grace Marks, een huishoudster en immigrant uit Ierland. Ze wordt in 1843 gevangen genomen, wellicht onterecht, voor de moord op haar werkgever Thomas Kinnear. Grace beweert zich niets van de moord te herinneren, maar de feiten zijn onweerlegbaar.
