In Madiba wordt het levensverhaal van Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) verteld vanaf 1927 tot zijn inauguratie tot president in 1994. Het verhaal begint als Nelson zijn vader op negenjarige leeftijd verliest. In 1944, als hij rechten studeert in Johannesburg, raakt hij al snel betrokken bij het ANC, de politieke groepering die was opgericht om op te komen voor de belangen van de zwarte bevolking.
