Dancing on the Edge volgt de Louis Lester Band, een groep zwarte jazzmusici die zeer geliefd waren in de Engelse hogere kringen tijdens de jaren 30 van de vorige eeuw. Engeland was dol op hen, zelfs de koninklijke familie, tot moord een einde maakte aan hun muzikale sprookje.
