Nadat Taira no Kiyomori aan de macht is gekomen, wordt de Minamoto-clan verbannen. Minamoto no Yoritomo ontmoet Masako, de zus van Hōjō Yoshitoki, en trouwt later met haar. Na dit huwelijk beginnen de wielen van Yoshitoki's lot te draaien.
